It isn't clear if this started recently or if it's something that's going on because it's pre-Christmas or if it just happens occasionally and right now it's happening.
as a flagship phone ages on the market it generally comes down in price some, but maybe just 20%. In a few cases though, for instance right now, with pixel and Samsung they have specific phones which are two to four year-old designs and have dropped sometimes up to 80%. The downside is they won't be getting many more upgrades if any, and you'll be getting texts and notifications from Android that they want you to buy a new phone, right after you just bought one. But you can ignore all that and just keep on using it. And if you get an $800 phone for 300 bucks that's a pretty good deal.
How do you find those deals? Well I look exclusively on Amazon at NEW phones. And pick out an older flagship and then start carefully tracking it every day or two. When you find one that's dropping look at the details, and sometimes they'll be $100 cheaper just by color. right now there's one out there that's $429 for the black one and $329 for the white one with 256gb. That's a crazy discount for a flagship Samsung s10e phone. Now s10e is the 'budget' S10 phone, but for my money it's a flagship. And if you keep watching there's a good chance it'll drop below 300 bucks before disappearing.
After watching Amazon for months these deals don't come up every day, but it seems interesting that two big companies are offering big discounted phones right now.
If you don't mind spending more to get a recent flagship the Samsung s20 Fe on Amazon is around $200 off the original price. Way too much for me, but my understanding is it has the same guts as the super expensive s20.
And in closing, Android and Apple phones have made it easy to switch to a new phone. It used to be somewhat of an ordeal, but this pixel took me a couple of hours and I had everything off my old phone and was completely comfortable using the new one.
