After buying 16 inch diameter car tires over many years on a variety of family vehicles here are some thoughts.
#1 buy a vehicle with 16 inch or smaller diameter factory tires.
#2 don't buy a car with 17 inch or larger rims and then decide to get 16 inch rims when you need tires. This is tempting, because 16 inch tires are cheaper than the bigger 17+ inch tires. Many cars will allow smaller rims, but it's a big headache.
If you have lots of money buy:
- Michelin
- Bridgestone
- Continental
in no particular order. These are premium tires. They will generally be quieter.
Otherwise go to Walmart or Discount Tire. Do not go to Costco or Sam's club.
At Walmart or Discount Tire insist on getting their cheaper tires. Get the factory size tire for your car. In 2022 they should run $65-75 a tire. Make sure the tires have a tread warranty of at least 50,000 miles. Get all season radials.
In summary:
- Walmart or Discount Tire
- Factory size tire
- All season radials
- $60 - $75 each
- Minimum 50,000 mile tread wear
- Do NOT get road hazard coverage.
Out the door should be about $470 max.
$300 tires
$120 install
$50 tax
